Bilingual English-Arabic Programme for 3 to 4 y/o and 5 to 6 y/o

The Bilingual English-Arabic Programme is a specially tailored programme which aims to expose and immerse children to the English and Arabic languages in a naturalistic bilingual environment. This research-based approach to learning a second language involves hands-on lessons based on activities such as story-telling, drama, art, music and physical education. Support for children’s understanding of Arabic is provided in the form of redundancy in instruction through the use of gestures, repetition and demonstration. This balanced programme is a departure from traditional second language classes where the target language is taught as an independent subject. Instead, children are meaningfully engaged in activities while being exposed and/or immersed in the two languages. Through positive interactions with our trained teachers, it is our mission to provide children with a nurturing environment immersed in meaningful interactions in a foreign language, Arabic, with support from their first language, English.

While these are general expectations of what children can do at the end of the programme, it must be highlighted that children develop at different rates and success in learning a second language differs from one child to another. Children are assumed to have English as the main language spoken at home upon enrollment into the programme.

.

This programme is designed for children aged three to four years. Children at this stage are still acquiring English and as such, require support from their first language to learn a second language (Arabic). To enable this, two teachers are present during the lessons, each speaking exclusively in English or Arabic. Children learn through hands-on activities which are rich in meaningful conversations. The main aim is to expose children to the Arabic language in a naturalistic and non-threatening environment. Students are expected to be able to produce routine greetings and names of  common concrete objects at the end of the two years.

.

While these are general expectations of what children can do at the end of the programme, it must be highlighted that children develop at different rates and success in learning a second language differs from one child to another. Children are assumed to have English as the main language spoken at home upon enrolment into the programme.

This programme is for children aged 5 to 6 years old. Lessons are activity-based enriched by quality interactions between teacher and children in English and Arabic. There will be, however, periods of time where activities are carried out solely in Arabic. Children at this stage are ready to be introduced to Arabic letters and sounds before gradually progressing to recognising and reading simple Arabic words. The main aim is to immerse children in the Arabic language through meaningful activities. Students are expected to be ready for the Madrasah Entrance Test – Arabic at the end of the two-year programme.

Alhamdulilah Hana is enjoying her time in class and she is trying to recall Arabic words she learnt in class. I am also learning those words shared by the Ustazah and helping her use them daily. I hope in future she is able to form a sentence in Arabic.
